Abstract
Pride and Prejudice in its original form was entitled Firs Impressions and was begun in 1796. The following year, in 1797, it was refused by a publisher and only after undergoing a rigorous revision of text and change of name was it finally presented to the public becoming Austen’s best know book the hero, Darcy, is insufferably proud but his pride is broken when he sees himself through the eyes of the woman he loves, Elizabeth, who is prejudiced against him until she sees the person beneath the mask of arrogance. The comedy in the novel is the lightest and most sparkling Jane Austen ever wrote. Her writing is not dramatic in style or plot; but through the medium of ordinary conversation she conveys a world of human feelings with a subtlety that few in the history of literature have ever matched.

A journey between two worlds

The story follows Hank Morgan, a skilled engineer from Connecticut, who is suddenly transported back in time to the court of King Arthur.

In this medieval setting, Hank uses his knowledge of modern science and technology to:

• impress the people of the past
• convince them he is a powerful magician
• introduce innovations far ahead of their time
• attempt to reshape society

Modern technology meets medieval society

At the core of the novel lies the contrast between:

• modern knowledge and progress
• medieval beliefs and traditions

Through this clash, Twain explores themes such as:

• the power of knowledge
• the limits of progress
• superstition and ignorance
• social and political structures

A mix of humor and critical reflection

Mark Twain’s writing is known for:

• sharp satire
• engaging storytelling
• ironic tone
• thought-provoking ideas
